On March 25, officials of the Ministry of Education and Science held a meeting with female MPs. The meeting was attended by the Minister of Construction and Urban Development, and Minister of Environment and Tourism as well as representatives of the ministries. During the meeting, they exchanged views on the comprehensive plan for students to catch up on studies as well as ways to improve sanitation facilities at schools, kindergartens, and dorms.
This academic year, 45 percent of the lessons in the curriculum have been provided remotely through TV and online classes. Due to factors such as the location of their homes, availability of devices to access the internet, livelihood, and energy access, there are 174 thousand children that are unable to be involved in the classes.
Noting that students falling behind in studies is an issue that has occurred in other countries as well, the ministry officials highlighted that a study was conducted on international practices being implemented to resolve the issue. Through the study, they have found that the ‘3 tiers’ system of the US and the 3R system of the UK would be the most effective if implemented in Mongolia. As about 3 years are required to fully catch up, the students are planned to be provided with support in three forms: general, supplementary, and special.
Furthermore, the Ministry was tasked to resolve the issue regarding sanitary facilities at schools, kindergartens, and dorms by improving their conditions at no less than 100 locations each year as reflected in the government’s action program for 2020-2024. As cross-sectoral partnership is crucial in matters such as conducting research on soil, water, and the general environment as well as choosing the appropriate technology for the conditions, the Cabinet made a decision to involve the Ministry of Construction and Urban Development and the Ministry of Environment and Tourism in carrying out corresponding works.
In rural areas, 43 percent of schools, 49 percent of dorms, and 23 percent of kindergartens are not equipped with modern sanitation facilities.
