FROM GLOBAL KNOWLEDGE TO NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT: A CENTURY SINCE THE FIRST MONGOLIAN STUDENTS STUDIED ABROAD

A scholarly conference entitled “The First Mongolians Who Studied in Germany and France” was held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mongolian students and young scholars beginning their studies in Western Europe.

On 27 November 1925, the Government of the People’s Republic of Mongolia decided to send 35 students from different parts of the country to Germany and France for education. In 1926, these young students travelled abroad to pursue their studies, marking a significant milestone in the history of Mongolian education.

After gaining knowledge and experience in European countries, particularly in education, science, culture, and social development, they returned to Mongolia and made valuable contributions to the development of modern Mongolia’s education, science, arts and culture, and industrial sectors.

However, their stories also reflect a tragic chapter in Mongolia’s history. Some fell victim to political repression and lost their lives at a young age, while others were imprisoned. Studying their lives and experiences is important not only for preserving historical memory but also for helping future generations understand the value of knowledge and education, freedom of thought, human rights, and justice.

The historic decision to regard knowledge as a foundation for national development and to connect younger generations with global education and scientific advancement remains as relevant today as ever.

Learning from the past and preparing educated, knowledgeable citizens who can apply global knowledge and experience to Mongolia’s development and contribute to building the nation’s future remain among the fundamental missions of the education sector.
