MUSIC TEACHERS FROM GENERAL EDUCATION SCHOOLS TO PARTICIPATE IN MASTERCLASSES

Minister of Education L. Enkh-Amgalan met with Scottish director and choreographer Xena Gusthart to exchange views on supporting the professional development of music teachers in general education schools. Xena Gusthart is an accomplished artist and director with extensive experience as a choreographer for internationally acclaimed productions and musicals, including MJ the Musical, based on the life of Michael Jackson, and Bat Out of Hell.

As part of Mongolia’s education reform, particular emphasis is being placed on equipping children not only with knowledge but also with essential 21st-century skills, including creative thinking, critical reflection, collaboration, self-expression, and understanding and respecting others.

Arts education plays a vital role in developing these competencies. Music and arts classes are not solely intended to teach children how to sing or play musical instruments, or to train professional artists. Rather, they aim to nurture every child’s talents, imagination, creativity and self-confidence, while fostering teamwork and collaboration.

The Ministry of Education is implementing a phased approach to supporting the professional development of music teachers. As part of these efforts, the Ministry previously collaborated with D. Otgonbayar, guitarist of the Mongolian rock band Khurd, to strengthen music teachers’ professional skills and capacities.

During the meeting, the participants exchanged views on current trends in arts education, teaching methodologies and teachers’ professional development, and explored opportunities for future cooperation.

Globally, increasing attention is being given to children’s social and emotional development, communication skills, and empathy—the ability to understand and respect others. Arts education is an effective means of fostering these competencies and plays an important role in supporting children’s holistic development.

Minister L. Enkh-Amgalan emphasized the importance of supporting the professional development of music and arts teachers and improving the quality of instruction and teaching methodologies.
