T. Nyam-Ochir, State Secretary of the Ministry of Education, met with Zarina Abdullaeva, Project Manager of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)’s “Enhancing Technical Skills of Young Engineers in the Energy Sector” project.
The meeting focused on policies and cooperation in higher and vocational education.
The project has been implemented since April 2025 with funding from the EBRD’s Japan–EBRD Cooperation Fund and the EBRD Shareholder Special Fund, in cooperation with the School of Energy Engineering of the Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST), the National Power Transmission Grid SOE, and Resilience Consulting Service LLC.
Under the project, a bachelor’s programme in Smart Grids and Systems was developed, with the first cohort of 31 students enrolled for the 2026–2027 academic year. The project has also supported capacity-building for instructors, provided training equipment, and helped establish the laboratories and practical learning facilities required to implement the new programme.
T. Nyam-Ochir highlighted the importance of developing not only quality academic programmes but also training and research environments and practical facilities to prepare and upskill engineering and technical professionals, address skills gaps, and better align education with labour market needs.
The sides discussed opportunities for cooperation in developing a skilled workforce aligned with labour market demand and addressing skills gaps. Zarina Abdullaeva also expressed the EBRD’s readiness to join the Education Public Group and contribute to its activities.
